Happy Book Birthday to SUMMER OF L.U.C.K.!
Summer of L.U.C.K., for middle grade readers, is about three kids searching for self-acceptance. Stuttering Darby is never perfect enough for her mother. Justin’s been silent since his dad died. Naz is struggling to learn English. But after they meet at summer camp, mysterious calliope music from an abandoned warehouse grants them power to communicate telepathically. When they sneak inside, the dark, empty space bursts into a magical carnival. They meet the ghost of Leroy Usher, Carnival King (the title’s L.U.C.K.), who asks for their help convincing his family to restore the carnival to its former glory. In return, he teaches them how to find their voices. We’re so happy you’re at our party for SUMMER OF L.U.C.K. Join in the fun…

PARTY LOCATION…
Our party takes place at the magical L.U.C.K. carnival that Darby, Justin, and Naz discover next to Camp Inch, their summer camp.
PARTY SOUNDS…
We are listening to calliope music from L.U.C.K.’s carousel — the very same music that grants Justin, Naz, and Darby the power to communicate telepathically. Can you hear what everyone’s thinking???
PARTY FOOD…
We’ll bring in a buffet of summer camp favorites, like burgers, hot dogs, baked beans, roasted veggies, and corn on the cob. But Camp Inch’s special desserts will be our centerpiece: candy apples, root beer floats, and, of course, roasted marshmallows. Plus, cotton candy from the L.U.C.K. carnival. Yum!
PARTY GAMES…
One of the most important moments in Summer of L.U.C.K. takes place at the Camp Fair, so we’ll experience some of the games/activities that Naz, Darby, and Justin enjoy, including fortune telling, caricatures by D. Vin. Shee, (wash off) tattoos, and a dunking booth.
PARTY FAVORS…
Everyone leaves with an official Summer of L.U.C.K. bookmark, plus a sparkly Self-Acceptance Certificate. “No longer needs to be perfect,” reads Darby’s. Justin’s and Naz’s praise their growth while at Camp Inch. What does yours say?
